Magic Item Priority: What to Use Now vs. What to Save
Magic items — hammers, books, potions, runes — are the most misplayed resource in Clash of Clans, and it's always the same mistake in two directions: people hoard the powerful ones for a "perfect moment" that never comes, and they waste the cheap ones on things that didn't need them. Both leak progress. Here's a simple priority system for deciding, every time you earn one, whether to spend it now or bank it.
(Item names and exact effects can change with updates — this is about how to prioritize them. Current through Town Hall 18.)
The one rule that prevents 90% of mistakes
A magic item's value is the time it saves you, measured against time you'd otherwise have to wait anyway. That single idea resolves almost every "should I use this now?" question:
- A Book of Building that skips a 14-day upgrade is worth far more than one that skips a 2-day upgrade. Same item, wildly different value, depending on what you point it at.
- An item sitting in your inventory is worth nothing until you spend it. Hoarding isn't "saving value" — it's deferring it, and often forfeiting it when better items arrive and you still haven't used the old ones.
So the goal isn't to save items for a mythical best moment. It's to spend each item on the longest applicable timer you currently have, and keep the pipeline moving.
The tiers: spend-now vs. save
Group your items by how much you should agonize over them:
Use freely, don't overthink (low scarcity):
- Resource potions, training/research/builder boosts, small timer skips. These refill constantly from events, Clan Games, and the shop. Banking them is just slower play. Pop them whenever they help — a builder boost during an upgrade sprint, a resource potion when you're short for the next upgrade.
Spend deliberately on your longest timers (high scarcity):
- Book of Building → your single longest building upgrade in progress (or the next one you'll start). Never burn it on something short.
- Book of Heroes → your longest upgrade. Heroes are usually your biggest power gap, so this is often your most valuable item.
