What to Upgrade First After a New Town Hall: The ClashVault Priority Framework
The moment you drop a new Town Hall, the game hands you a problem it never quite explains: a few hundred possible upgrades, a fixed handful of builders, and no guidance on order. Most "upgrade order" guides answer this with a numbered list — do this building, then that one. That advice is wrong for almost everyone who reads it, because the correct order depends on your account: your war schedule, your builder count, what you've already rushed, and what you actually attack with.
So instead of a list you'll ignore by week two, here's the decision framework we built the Left-to-Max calculator around. Learn the framework and you can sequence any Town Hall, in any patch. (Everything below is current as of Town Hall 18, the live cap.)
The one principle that beats every checklist
Every builder-hour you don't spend is gone forever. Same for every hour your lab sits empty and every hour a hero stands on the ground instead of leveling up. Progress in Clash isn't really about which building you pick — it's about never leaving a worker idle. A player who always keeps five builders, the lab, and their heroes busy will out-pace a player with a "perfect" order who lets a builder sit for two days saving up for the big one.
Internalize that and most "what next?" decisions answer themselves: the best upgrade is usually whatever keeps a slot from going idle, biased toward the tiers below.
The triage: three questions, in order
When a slot frees up, ask these in sequence and stop at the first "no":
- Am I getting farmed? A fresh Town Hall means your defenses are suddenly under-leveled for your loot. If you're losing resources every time you log off, your next builder goes to defense.
- Can I pull my weight in war? If your offense can't 3-star the bases you're matched against, the next slot goes to whatever fixes that — usually a troop level, a hero, or a spell you actually use.
- What unlocks the most downstream value? Only once you're safe and war-relevant does pure optimization (economy, walls, the long tail) take over.
The priority tiers
This is the part you can screenshot. It's not a strict order — it's how to weight the next slot once triage points you at a category.
